Advice to Rahula

This sweet teaching was given to the young monk Rahula: the Buddha’s son.

[The Buddha]
Do you honor the wise one, the renunciate,
the torch bearer who shows the way?

[Rahula]
I do honor the wise one, the renunciate,
the torch bearer who shows the way.

[The Buddha]
Then free yourself from the five temptations,
Renounce the home life, and free yourself from all suffering.

Make good spiritual friends. Live in a quiet, secluded place.
Be frugal in food, clothes, medicine, and shelter.
Do not crave for more of these things.
Do not turn your attention to the desires of the world.

Carefully follow the rules of a monk.
Keep watch over your urges.
Practice mindfulness of the body,
and develop dispassion.

Do not focus on only beautiful things that arouse passion
But also meditate too on the ugly things,
and so cultivate a mind that is calm and collected.

Meditate on emptiness,
to get rid of a sense of self.
By thoroughly understanding this,
you can find the highest peace.
