The Path of Peace (Metta Sutta #2)

This is a part of a series going line by line from the Metta Sutta. It starts here.

And who knows the path of peace

In line one we learned that loving kindness is a skill to be practice. In line two we learn that it is a wisdom to be learned. That word know is sometimes underemphasized in some schools of Buddhism. This is of course a reaction again the Abbhidhammic schools of Buddhism in which book learnin’ is overemphasized. Here in the first two lines we find out that kind, far from being purely an animal instinct is a skill to be practiced and a teaching to be learned. Just as in meditation practice, samatha and vipassana are to be developed together, in metta both understanding and action have their place.
