A Buddhist Mealtime Blessing

As a mealtime blessing, Buddhist monks and nuns sometimes chant the Maha Assapura Sutta. He talks about ethics, restraint, and the like, but here’s what he has to say about food:

We will practice moderation in eating. We won’t eat for pleasure or to get drunk or to grow sleek and beautiful. We will eat to survive and care for our body and to maintain ourselves in the holy life. As we eat we will remember: “I will end my hunger without overeating. I will take care of my health, and with a clear conscience, live with ease.”
